Schools kill creativity

A friend posted this on his girlfriend’s wall, who is a teacher. I was intrigued, so I watched it. You should too – it’ll be 20 minutes well spent.

My mom is also a teacher. My dad never went to college. Instead, he joined the military, learned a trade, and then eventually started his own business. Both had similar life outcomes.

I love what Ken Robinson has to say about creativity and the school system. I’m only now realizing that having the highest GPA or taking honors and AP courses was not necessarily the right decision in high school. At that point in my life, I scoffed at classes like home economics and even wood-shop, thinking they’d never get me where I wanted to be.

Little did I know, those were the things I turned out to be most passionate about in my adult life. Not that my degree hasn’t put me in a good position in life, but I do believe what Ken says…

Degrees aren’t worth anything.

While they do help open doors, they aren’t 100% about personal success. Sometimes, I feel silly and ignorant that I’m only now learning how to sew when so many others (including my mother) were making all their own clothes.

If I could, I’d rewind the tape, take time to learn some of life’s basic skills and sprinkle in the education where experience didn’t cover all the bases. I’m extremely grateful for my college education, I just wish I’d spent some time focusing on life too. Better late than never, eh?
